Inverurie Bowling Club - A Brief History
Inverurie Bowling Club was established in May 1884. A new clubhouse was built in 1976 which doubled in size in 1981 and was officially opened by Scottish bowls legend David McGill.
This is our existing clubhouse and a complete new roof was fitted at the start of season 2010. The clubhouse is suitable for dances and social occasions and can be hired out to the local community. The hall is also used for short carpet bowling during the winter months.
We have a committee of 12 which meets monthly and the AGM is held during the last week of February. We have a membership of 104 at present comprising 52 men, 28 ladies, 6 juniors, 1 honorary member, 6 life members and 16 social members. We have a very enthusiastic certified coach assisting all ages of bowlers including partially sighted bowlers who are welcome at our green on Fridays from 12-2pm
In 1984 we celebrated our Centenary Year and in 2009 we marked our 125th anniversary with an afternoon of bowling and evening meal.
From a bowling point of view, Inverurie Bowling Club falls within District 3 of the Bowls Scotland governing body. We are also a member of the Counties of Aberdeen and Kincardine Association, the Benachie Bowling Association, the Forbes Hendry Trophy Association and the Crowmallie Cup Bowling Association. We are also members of two ladies associations, namely the Grampian Ladies BA and the Craigie Ladies. For the juniors, we are affiliated to the Grampian Juniors Bowling Association and the Scottish Young Bowlers Association. Competitively, the Club has fared very well, winning many association competitions. During season 2010, six members of the Club were selected to represent the Aberdeen and Kincardine county team. The club also hosts at least one county game each year for the Andrew Hamilton Trophy.
In 2010, we won the prestigious Counties of Aberdeen and Kincardine Top 10 competition. This is the second time we have won this competition, the first time being in 1999.
We have had some success nationally in recent years, having won the S.B.A Senior Fours in 1990 and the S.B.A Gents Pairs in 1999.
We are also proud to have four young bowlers capped for Scotland – Brian Jessiman (1994) and Lee Collins (1999) in the under 25’s and in 2010, Andrew Thomson skipped a rink against North of England at Shettleston in the under 17’s. Jason Banks joined our list of internationals in 2011 when he was selected to skip a rink against North of England in the Under 17's at Gosforth Bowling Club.
Inverurie Bowling Club welcomes new members of any age and gender and of all levels of bowling experience. For any more information, please complete the contact form which is located on the Contact tab on the left of your screen.
